International Literacy Day and Women

Editor
April 29, 2010

September 8 is International Literacy Day.

UNESCO declared it so on November 17, 1965 with an aim to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies.

Some 774 million adults lack minimum literacy skills; one in five adults is still not literate and two-thirds of them are women; 72.1 million children are out-of-school and many more attend irregularly or drop out.

Literacy plays a huge role in the upliftment of women in society. Without education, there is a lack of awareness about rights. Women are vulnerable without education and the light brought into their lives by education is unmatched by any other.

Share your experiences on the importance of education in the lives of women. Real life stories, news, analysis - all welcome.

The theme for this month on Shetizenjournalist is "Women and Literacy." Not only in the sense of women being on the receiving end of education but also as a participant in the process, of being educated and educating others.
