Majority of them do not speak out due to a lack of awareness and education. A study says, in West Bengal, nearly 3 hundred thousands of Muslim women are separated and more than one hundred thousand Muslim women are divorced in the districts of Murshidabad and Malda alone. According to a government committee report two years back, Muslim women are socially and economically the most vulnerable in India and in West Bengal, where almost 28 % of the population is Muslim, the situation is worse. “The backwardness of the Muslim community in Bengal is due to Partition of Bengal. In West Bengal the Muslim Community faces a big leadership problem in case of education or social developments” said Miratun Nahar, a columnist and former member of the State Women’s Commission.
