  In Turkey,

discussion has re-erupted over "honor killings," after a 16-year old girl, Medine Memi, was buried alive as punishment for talking with boys. In Kahta, police found a female's body, marked with the initials "MM," hands tied behind her back, and in a sitting position, buried in a 2-meter deep hole under a chicken coup next to the girl's home. The soil found in her lungs and stomach during postmortem examinations reveal that Medine was alive and conscious when buried—her body was not bruised or drugged. Previously, Medine had repeatedly gone to the police to report that she was being beaten, but was sent back home each time. She went missing in December 2009, and her body was discovered in early February 2010. Her father and grandfather have been taken into custody for the murder, but not charged.

Kahta, a predominantly Kurdish, conservative city in south-east Turkey, is in a province where honor killings are most prevalent. Honor killings are linked to traditional customs in this region, rather than to Islamic religious practices. When a female member of a family is deemed to have tarnished the family's reputation, usually for "inappropriate" interactions with men, according to custom the male family members will be pressured by the community to bring honor back to the family by killing the so-called dishonorable female. Following the killing, the family will act as if that female member never existed. Even rape is grounds for honor killing. Statistics about the number of honor killings occurring annually in Turkey and in other countries are unreliable.   Please visit GlobalSister.org for more information.
