Saturday, 12th June is the World Day against child labour.
It is a shame for us that child labour still persists and in fact is quite common in certain parts of the world. All over the world children are found working in factories, mines, prostitution, quarries, agriculture, or for family business or carrying out odd jobs.
According to the UNICEF, there are around 158 million children aged 5 to 14 in child labour worldwide and that excluding child domestic labour. The UN stipulated in article 32 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child that, “...States Parties recognize the right of the child to be protected from economic exploitation and from performing any work that is likely to be hazardous or to interfere with the child's education, or to be harmful to the child's health or physical, mental, spiritual, moral or social development. Although globally there is an estimated 250 milllion children working.”
According to Wikipedia, child labour accounts for 22% of the workforce in Asia, 32% in Africa, 17% in Latin America, 1% in US, Canada, Europe and other wealthy nations. The proportion of child labourers varies a lot among countries and even regions inside those countries.
As long as there is poverty there will be child labour. As long as our social consciousness sleeps, there will be child labour. Mere legislation is no solution. We all have to stand together and say NO to child labor and raise our voice against this malpractice.
For the month of June, Shetezenjournalist.com will focus on “Child Labour.”
